Market Dynamics

Market Drivers

Increasing Demand for Processed Food

Busy lifestyles and urbanization have increased the need for easy, ready-to-eat, or ready-to-cook foods. Consumers benefit from processed goods such as frozen dinners, snacks, and packaged foods, which offer convenience and time savings. Millennials and younger are the easiest targets for ready-to-eat food manufacturers because they spend most of their money on such products. As a result, the ease ofuse of such products is driving up global market demand. Working-class people, teenage children, hostel residents, and bachelors increasingly turn to instant or easy-to-prepare snacking and ready meals because of their hectic lifestyles.

Furthermore, the on-the-go notion is intimately linked to the ease of consumption and handling of items that ready-to-eat food provides. HelloFresh, a meal kit provider, claimed its ready-to-eat business would be its "biggest source of order growth" in 2023. In August 2023, the company also launched The Pets Table, a new dog food subscription service. The globalization of food supply chains has boosted the availability of processed foods in various regions and countries. As people seek a more extensive range of food options, demand for processed goods, especially those containing Ethoxyquin as a preservative, continues to rise. The increasing demand for processed food products is directly proportional to the market for antioxidants and preservatives such as Ethoxyquin.

Additionally, Ethoxyquin is commonly used in the processed food sector to prevent oxidation of fats, oils, and other sensitive constituents, hence preserving product freshness and quality. As the processed food market expands due to changing consumer preferences and lifestyle trends, demand for Ethoxyquin as a crucial preservative is likely to stay high, supporting the expansion of the worldwide ethoxyquin market.

Market Restraints

Regulatory Restrictions and Scrutiny

Ethoxyquin is subject to regulatory scrutiny and limits in several regions due to concerns about its safety and potential health effects. Regulatory agencies set maximum residue limits (MRLs) for Ethoxyquin in food and feed products, and adhering to these limits is critical for market access. In the European Union (EU), Ethoxyquin is classified as a feed additive, and its usage is subject to stringent restrictions and safety assessments by the European Food Safety Authority. The EU establishes maximum residue limits (MRLs) for Ethoxyquin in various food products to protect consumer safety. The European Commission (EC) also prohibited using Ethoxyquin as a feed additive for all animal species in June 2017. The restriction was imposed due to a lack of data to determine the safety of the synthetic antioxidant and the presence of p-phenetidine. In August 2022, the European Commission issued Regulation (EU) 2022/1375, which definitively limits the use of Ethoxyquin as a feed additive. This law also prohibits the use of ethoxyquin in agricultural goods fed with it, as well as fish meals imported into the European Union.

Similarly, China regulates the use of Ethoxyquin in food and feed products. In recent years, China has tightened rules on Ethoxyquin, requiring stronger MRLs and product labeling. As of November 2022, China still authorizes using Ethoxyquin, a synthetic antioxidant, in food and animal agriculture. However, in December 2022, a Peruvian fishmeal dealer stated that China may face pressure to discontinue purchasing ethoxyquin-treated fishmeal as other countries ban or phase out the preservative.

In addition, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) regulate Ethoxyquin in the United States. The FDA regulates Ethoxyquin as a preservative in animal feed, dehydrated crops, and sorghum and as an antioxidant in chili powder, paprika, and ground chilli. The permitted uses of Ethoxyquin in animal feed are addressed in Title 21, Parts 573.380 and 573.400 of the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR). According to 21 CFR 573.380 and 573.400, the maximum amount of Ethoxyquin allowed in animal feed and forage is 150 parts per million (ppm). 21 CFR 172.140 specifies the established limitations for ethoxyquin residue in animal products intended for human consumption.

Market Opportunity

Expansion of Aquaculture and Poultry Industries

The aquaculture and poultry sectors are expanding rapidly worldwide, driven by rising demand for protein-rich diets. Ethoxyquin prevents fat and oil oxidation, which is critical for maintaining aquafeeds' and poultry feeds' quality and nutritional integrity. The rise of these businesses creates the potential for ethoxyquin manufacturers to meet the expanding demand for feed preservatives.

Additionally, aquaculture has increased in recent years, driven by rising global demand for seafood products. According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), aquaculture production is predicted to reach 185 million tonnes in 2023, up 0.6% from 2022. This increase is primarily attributable to the growth and intensity of aquaculture in the North Atlantic and tiny pelagics in the Eastern Pacific. According to World Bank research, worldwide aquaculture production has increased at an average annual rate of 5.3% since 1970, exceeding growth in traditional capture fisheries. This upward trend is projected to continue as the demand for seafood develops, particularly in emerging economies with expanding middle classes.

Similarly, the poultry business continues to expand as a global key source of animal protein. According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), global poultry meat output is expected to exceed 137 million tonnes by 2030, with developing countries driving most of the increase. According to the FAO, worldwide poultry meat output is predicted to reach 142 million tonnes by 2023, up 1% from the previous year, as Ethoxyquin is frequently used as a feed preservative in aquafeeds and chicken feeds to prevent fat and oil oxidation, increasing shelf life and preserving nutritional content.

North America Dominates the Global Market

North America is the most significant global ethoxyquin market shareholder and is estimated to grow at a CAGR of 4.4% over the forecast period. Some drivers propelling the North American market included rising demand for pet food, rapid growth in the aquaculture industry, and a scarcity of alternatives on the market. For example, prominent North American poultry manufacturers such as Tyson Foods and Pilgrim's Pride use ethoxyquin-based feed additives in their poultry diets to guarantee the freshness and nutritional integrity of feed ingredients. According to US government data, chicken is anticipated to account for 41% of all meat consumed by 2030, more than tripling the growth rate of pork and ten times that of beef. The average American consumes over 115 pounds of poultry yearly, a considerable rise from 34 pounds in 1960. Ethoxyquin aids poultry breeders in maintaining their flocks' health, growth, and performance by conserving feed ingredient quality and reducing nutrient degradation.

However, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) classifies Ethoxyquin as a limited chemical because it has averaged less than 5,000 pounds of active ingredient per year for the past five years. The EPA has decided that Ethoxyquin is eligible for reregistration and tolerance reassessment if a label adjustment is implemented.

Europe is anticipated to exhibit a CAGR of 4.1% over the forecast period. Europe has the second highest share of the market by region. In the European aquaculture business, Ethoxyquin is commonly used as a feed preservative to prevent fat and oil oxidation in aquafeed formulations. In February 2023, household consumption of fresh aquaculture products fell in volume and value in most EU member states, with Denmark and Sweden experiencing the most significant declines. In 2022, household expenditure on aquaculture goods in the EU-27 climbed by about 11% over 2021, while higher costs in 2023 reduced consumption. Ethoxyquin assists European aquaculture companies in ensuring the health, growth, and quality of their farmed fish and shrimp by reducing nutrient degradation and maintaining the freshness of feed ingredients.

The Asia-Pacific ethoxyquin market is distinguished by its broad applications in various industries, including agriculture, aquaculture, pet food, and preservation.
