The Growing Popularity of Vacation Rentals in the US

21 Jun, 2024 | Statistics

The travel and tourism sector is seeing rapid growth, with the vacation rental industry playing a significant role in this growth. A new era of travel has been brought about by the mainstream vacation rental sector, which appeals to all age groups and socioeconomic backgrounds. While travelling to new places and escaping the daily grind has always been a part of the human experience, how we choose to spend our limited vacation time has changed dramatically.

A Booming Market

Renting a vacation home wasn't always a smooth internet experience. When holiday rentals first started, they were frequently spontaneous agreements made by homeowners via basic classified advertising or word-of-mouth. These days, websites like Airbnb and VRBO have completely changed the process, giving visitors a quick and simple way to locate and reserve lodging that meets their preferences.

Many opt for holiday rentals for various reasons, including cost-effectiveness, privacy and space, and homely features like kitchens and laundry rooms. These accommodations provide guests with distinctive local experiences, flexible stay lengths, and frequently pet-friendly choices. Comparing vacation rentals to typical hotels, many guests feel them to be safer and more controlled surroundings, and they offer a personalized experience with a range of property types.

The vacation rental market is growing at a rate never seen before. Travel expenditures by international visitors, especially millennials, amount to almost $180 billion annually. This group spends an estimated US$180 billion on travel each year, making them the largest in the vacation rental sector. With a market share of 30.9% in 2022, renters between the ages of 25 and 34 made up the largest segment of the vacation rental industry.

The trend is considerably more noticeable in the United States. More and more Americans are choosing vacation rentals over hotels and resorts. This inclination derives from a need for cost-effectiveness, extra space, quiet, and homey comforts in a rental. Significant roles are also played by the flexibility in stay duration and the opportunity to engage in distinctive local experiences.

Preferences and Impact

The top vacation rental platforms preferred by Americans in 2023 included Airbnb (85%), VRBO (32%), (22%), TripAdvisor (18%), and Expedia (16%). These platforms have greatly aided in the expansion of the industry by streamlining the process of identifying and reserving vacation rentals. Airbnb, in particular, has a strong presence in the United States. As of 2024, Los Angeles boasts the highest number of Airbnb listings in the country, with over 45,000. New York City follows closely with around 39,700 listings.

The primary booking method for vacation rentals in the United States is overwhelmingly online (76%), with offline methods accounting for just 24%. Furthermore, the demand for pet-friendly vacation rentals has increased by 40%. This indicates a larger trend toward more flexible and customized travel solutions that meet the wide range of demands of contemporary travellers. Interestingly, the number of vacation rental market customers is anticipated to rise dramatically to 64.10 million consumers by 2028. This rise shows how crucial holiday rentals are to the economy and tourists.

The tourism sector makes a significant financial contribution to local tax revenue. The entire economic activity created by vacation rentals contributes to state and federal tax revenues in the United States, even though the IRS exempts rental income for houses rented out for fewer than 14 days annually. Additionally, the sector offers various lucrative work options, including operations managers, reservation agents, and housekeeping, all with competitive pay.

The vacation rental market is influential in the travel and tourism business, and it is not merely a trend. Vacation rentals have solidified their position as the go-to option for tourists looking for a place to stay when travelling, whether they are planning a quick weekend trip or a longer stay.
