Filament Pyrometers: the First Generation of Pyrometers

The potter Josiah Wedgwood invented the first pyrometer, i.e. the filament pyrometer, sometime in the 1780s. Later in the 1900s, L. Holborn and F. Kurlbaum introduced the modern disappearing filament pyrometer that also set the base of optical pyrometers. In today’s pyrometers, the temperature is measured by a dark filament that is cooler than the temperature source, bright filament, hotter than the source, and a disappeared filament, which is equal brightness of temperature source and filament.
