A substantial shift in the tourism industry is being brought about by the digital revolution. This industry has been transformed by the power of digitalization, from location selection and marketing tactics to online booking services and cost dynamics. Through social platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and Pinterest, travelers can now research and discover new places from the comfort of their homes.
A recent survey shows, there is an intriguing cross-generational pattern in how social media affects travel choices. Though it makes sense that internet-savvy generations like Gen Z and Millenials would be more influenced by social platforms, it's interesting to discover that even Gen Xers are not immune. The Survey revealed that over quarter of Gen Xers indicated facebook and instagram influenced their travel decision.
A staggering 46% of Gen Z and Millennials say instagram is the biggest effect on their travel decisions, while 34% say facebook has impact. In addition, 52% of this group admit that movies and TV shows influence their choice of travel destinations. In contrast, 43% of Gen Xers cite TV shows and movies, 22% mention facebook, and 22% believe instagram to be influential in their decisions.
The power of user-generated content has been wisely embraced by the travel sector in its marketing initiatives. Travel agencies now prominently highlight real travelers' experiences on their websites and social media channels to engage and excite new explorers. The process of making reservations has also been changed by digitalization, with online travel agents taking center stage. Online travel agencies like expedia, booking.com and Airbnb have altered planning and booking. Approximately 35% of individuals globally prefer booking.com, followed by Airbnb with a 25% preference and expedia with a 20% preference. These platforms have become popular due to their convenience and variety of options.
Airfare trends have experienced a notable shift, as July 2023 U.S. airfares have decreased by over 9% from the previous month, and even more significantly, by 19% from June 2022. Current airfares are lower than they were prior to the pandemic, in July 2019. However, other travel-related expenses have gone up. The hotel rates have climbed by about 7% over the past year, the cost of entertainment has climbed by more than 5%, while the cost of eating out has gone up by 7%.
The Airports Council International's annual ranking of the busiest airports interprets the global travel landscape. With 93.7 million people travelling through its terminal in 2022, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International airport regained its status as the busiest airport in the world. From the previous year, this represented a 24% rise.
