Achieving Sustainable Development Goals With AI

The United Nations focuses on development that crosses borders and accommodates people of every strata through 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). To create a landscape of global citizens, AI tools are helping bridge the gap between basic necessities of emerging/underserved countries to developed economies. Given below are 2 case studies that have helped shape agriculture and disaster relief in India and Nigeria. AI-Powered Flood Early Warning and Anticipatory Cash Transfers Country: Nigeria AI Tool: Google Flood Hub Issue: Vulnerable communities faced significant financial and livelihood losses because households often received limited warning before river flooding. Resolution: Google Flood Hub used AI-powered flood forecasting to provide warnings up to seven days in advance, while GiveDirectly used the forecasts to identify at-risk households and deliver cash transfers before flooding, helping families prepare and reduce potential losses. SDGs Achieved:  SDG 1 – No Poverty SDG 11 – Sustainable Cities and Communities SDG 13 – Climate Action AI-Powered Crop Disease Detection Country: India AI Tool: Plantix Issue: Farmers often face crop losses because identifying plant diseases, pests, and nutrient deficiencies at an early stage can be difficult. Resolution: Plantix uses computer vision and AI to analyze photographs of crops, identify diseases and pest damage, and provide farmers with treatment recommendations for faster intervention.
