Farm-to-Cup Traceability for Tea

3 min read

Traceable tea origin means tracking tea from the farm where the leaves are grown through harvesting, processing, packaging, and distribution, so consumers can verify where their tea came from and how it was produced.

Farm-to-Cup Traceability for Tea

How the process works?

  1. Farm registration and origin identification

Each tea garden or smallholder farm receives a unique identification. Its location, farmer details, cultivation practices, and relevant certification records are documented.

  1. Harvesting and collection

Farmers or collection agents record the plucking date, quantity of green leaves, farm ID, and collection details. A batch or lot ID links the leaves to their source.

  1. Transportation and factory intake

The system records transfers between farmers, collection centres, transporters, and factories.

  1. Processing and batch tracking

Manufacturing records link the incoming leaves to the processed tea batch, including processing dates, relevant quality checks, and any blending with other tea lots.

  1. Packaging and digital identity

A unique batch number or traceability code is linked to the packaged product. A QR code on the pack connects consumers to the product's verified origin and supply chain records.

  1. Consumer verification

Scanning the QR code can show the tea's growing region, producer details, harvesting and packaging dates, processing information, and verified sustainability or certification claims.
